The Best D Lock For Bikes

Which is the best D lock for bikes? This is a question that I’ve seen countless time online. So now to answer it.

I’ve selected the five best D locks on the market today and have reviewed and compared each one to save you the hassle! If you’d rather learn about the best bike locks on the market, read my review of the 8 best bike locks

D locks have long been recognised as one of, if not the most secure and reliable type of bike lock.

D locks are almost unrivalled when it comes to strength as they feature a solid metal shackle that completely encompasses your bike and its components.

D locks do not feature moving parts such as links or rivets that you’d expect to find on a chain or folding bike lock.

Moving parts can be a weakness and are often targeted by thieves, so the fact that the D lock doesn’t have any external moving parts only adds to their superiority.

Best Bike D Lock - Top D Locks Reviewed

As always, I recommend my readers invest in a D lock that holds the Sold Secure Silver rating, or higher. Bronze rated bike locks simply aren’t fit for purpose as they provide “protection from the opportunist thief”, which is inadequate for almost any bike.

As D locks are one of the oldest styles of bike lock, there are many well established and reputable brands that manufacture them.

ABUS, Kryptonite and OnGuard have all been producing top quality D locks for a long time and it’s no surprise that we see these companies appearing in this list of the top 5 best D locks.

So without further ado, we’ll dive straight into the 5 best D locks available on the market today.

The 5 Best Bike D Locks (In No Particular Order!)

ABUS Granit 59 Extreme – Impressively Strong, Incredible Engineering

Described by ABUS as “The toughest D lock money can buy” the ABUS Granit 59 D lock pulls out all the stops.

When designed, ABUS intended the Granit Extreme to be used to secure motorcycles, but it also provides an incredible level of security to bicycles “Even where there is a high risk of theft”.

The Granit Extreme 59 features a double-locking 16mm square parabolic shackle, which is “bolt cutter resistant”.

The shackle of this D lock is 26cm long and is made from hardened special steel, which puts up an incredible fight against the entire arsenal of tools a thief would have at their disposal.

The video below shows the Extreme 59 being used to secure a high-value motorbike, which shows it will have no trouble securing your bicycle. It also demonstrates how the double-locking shackle system operates, impressive engineering!

Best mount for ABUS bike lock

ABUS incorporated their XPlus cylinder which drastically increases the Extreme 59’s protection against picking. For this advanced locking mechanism, there are 1 million key variations.

Not many thieves will have the skill, ability or time to pick a lock, but the XPlus cylinder greatly adds to the security of this impressive D lock.

When it comes to transporting this lock there are brackets available, I found the Huldit Universal Bike Lock Mount to be the best option for the 59 Extreme. It provides a simple and efficient way to transport this chunky D lock.

Supplied with this D lock you will also receive two keys. One of these keys features a handy LED torch which will help when operating this D lock in the dark.

The X plus cylinder also has a sliding keyhole cover that will keep dust and debris from entering the locking system.

The strongest bike lock - sheldon brown locking method abus 59 extreme
The ABUS 59 Extreme provides enough locking space to secure multiple bikes. Great for garages & bike sheds.

ABUS Rated the Granit 59 Extreme at 20/20 on their in house security rating, which is incredible.

I can tell you now, the Extreme 59 is one of the best bike locks on the market

It’s no surprise that this monster D lock is featured on this list of the 5 best d locks. The Granit Extreme 59 received the Sold Secure Diamond Rating as well as ABUS’ maximum rating of 25/25.

This lock is considerably more expensive than others on this list, but for the features it has and the protection that it offers, it could be a worthy investment.

If you’re looking for a top-quality bike lock, capable of securing multiple bikes, this is the lock for you.

Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini – The Best D Lock Available

If you’ve had a look through BikeLockWiki already, you may be tired of reading about the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini by now! I don’t blame you, I’m also tired of writing about how good this D lock is.

The Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini is the best D lock money can buy and arguably provides more security for your bike than any other bike lock.

Weighing 4.55lb (2.06kg), with its Sold Secure Motorcycle Gold rating, the Fahgettaboudit also offers one of the best security/weight ratios on the market.

Unlike other D locks on the market, the Fahgettaboudit Mini features an 18mm Max-Performance steel shackle. If you know a bit about bike locks, this should be enough to blow you away.

If you’re new to the wonderful world of bicycle security, this means the security this D lock offers to its users is second to none.

I’ve never heard of an 18mm shackle being successfully cropped with hand-powered bolt cutters.

This is simply because even the largest hand-powered bolt cutters don’t open wide enough to encompass this lock’s shackle.

This is a fantastic feature as hand-powered bolt cutters are a popular choice of weapon for thieves, which means they won’t have any luck once your bike is secured with this D lock!

Kryptonite also decided to throw in their patented double deadbolt system. This means that if a thief managed to cut through the shackle of the Fahgettaboudit Mini, the shackle would not rotate or spin as a cheaper D lock would.

Instead, a second cut would have to be made, increasing the chances of the thief being caught.

This is yet another genius feature that drastically furthers the security of the Fahgettaboutidt and makes it the best D lock available.

The Fahgettaboudit Mini is labelled “mini” due to it’s smaller size (8.3cm x 15.3cm), which makes it much easier to transport than a larger lock.

This D lock can be easily stowed away in a rucksack or used with the Huldit Mount.

The smaller shackle size also makes the Fahgettaboudit almost immune to twist & hydraulic attacks.

If the shackle is correctly utilised and is full, it will be extremely difficult to fit anything through of significant strength, thus rendering this form of attack useless.

    Best Bike Lock
Many D locks may look sturdy but will not provide the security that your bike needs. Instead, opt for a reputable brand with a Sold Secure Gold rating.

The patented hardened steel sleeve and high-security disc-style cylinder add to the security of the Fahgettaboudit Mini.

These additional security features helped this D lock gain a Sold Secure Bicycle Diamond rating and Motorcycle Gold rating.

I have used the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit as my primary bike lock for nearly two years, and have never had an issue with it. If you’re after maximum portable security, this is the D lock for you.

Kryptonite Evolution Mini 5 Double Deadbolt – A Much Lighter Sold Secure Gold D Lock

Another one of the best D locks on the market, and another Kryptonite D lock. Kryptonite have mastered the art of producing top of the range security products.

This time we have the Kryptonite Evolution Mini 5. This D lock is not as hefty as the others on our list, but it does offer the best weight to security balance.

Weighing in at a tiny 1.2kg the Kryptonite Evolution Mini 5 is ideal for those who want a lock that offers Sold Secure Gold security, but wish to carry minimal weight.

The Evolution Mini 5 comes with a Flexframe-U Bracket that allows you to quickly and easily mount this small D lock onto your bike’s frame.

I’ve tested the Flexframe-U Bracket myself and have found it to be an efficient and convenient way of transporting a D lock whilst cycling.

The Best D lock - Evolution mini 5 with Huldit Mount
Whilst the Flexframe bracket is decent, it's not as reliable or practical as the Huldit Bike Lock Mount.

For the Evolution Mini 5’s price, it has features that you would not expect to see, such as the double deadbolt design and a sliding dust cover.

Much like the Fahgettaboudit, two cuts would have to be made in the shackle of this D lock for your bike to be removed. This feature is only found on the best D locks and gives you added peace of mind when securing your ride.

This lock utilises a 13mm Hardened Max-Performance Steel Shackle which is ‘resists bolt cutters and leverage attacks’.

13mm isn’t quite thick enough to be considered ‘bolt cutter proof’ however, this Max-Performance shackle will still resist even the biggest bolt cutters.

3 stainless steel keys are supplied with this D lock. These keys feature Kryptonite’s new key improved design, one key (as always with kryptonite’s best D locks) comes with an integrated LED torch, which is very convenient and can save a lot of time when attempting to operate the Evolution Mini in the dark.

    Kryptonite LED key fob
The key on the right features a bright LED that is very handy for operating your D lock in the dark. Most of the best kryptonite locks including the Fahgettaboudit include the LED key fob.

And…. there’s still more! The locking cylinder of the Evolution Mini 5 D lock has been upgraded so that it now has the higher security disc-style cylinder.

This cylinder is pick & drill resistant which adds to the already impressive security of this cleverly engineered D lock.

If you’re on a tighter budget, the Evolution Mini 5 is a great alternative to the Fahgettaboudit.

Whilst it doesn’t provide the same level of security, it is almost half the weight, making it more practical for use on-the-go!

Onguard Brute – Incredible Security at a Budget Price

The clue is in the name. This is a brute of a D lock. The Onguard Brute has the second thickest shackle in our list of the top five best D locks.

Measuring in at a whopping 16.8mm, its hardened steel TriRadius shackle ‘resists all forms of cutting, prying or jacking’ and is thick enough to be labelled ‘bolt cutter proof’.

See how the Brute performs against hydraulic bolt cutters in the video below.

This D lock gained the Sold Secure Diamond Bicycle Rating, which isn’t something you’d expect for a lock that’s as affordable as this.

The Brute is easily the cheapest lock in this list, which makes it more accessible to everyone, but also makes it one of the best cheap bike locks on the market.

Surprisingly, the Brute also features something that we don’t see from other locks on this list, the X4P Quattro Bolt Locking Mechanism. This advanced mechanism locks the shackle of the Brute on four sides, which provides increased security against most forms of attack.

If you aim to keep the paintwork of your bike free from scratches and dents, you’ll love the new co-moulded crossbar cover and the double rubber coating on the Brute’s shackle.

This coating will make sure your bike remains scratch-free and will prevent unnecessary wear and tear to this D lock’s shackle.

The Brute comes with 5 laser cut keys, one of which features an LED Microlight that is perfect for locking and unlocking in the dark.

You’ll also receive a lifetime warranty with the Brute. Even better value for money!

The Brute is a fantastic choice of bike D lock and has gained the Sold Secure Diamond rating. It’s also much more affordable for those on a tighter budget.

If you’re interested in the Brute, have a read of my in-depth review.

    Hiplok DXC – A One of a Kind Clip-On D Lock

It wouldn’t surprise me if you’ve already heard of this one! The Hiplok DXC is one of the first clip on D locks available on the market.

Its ingenious design allows it to be quickly clipped onto the back of your trousers, backpack or belt strap.

Weighing in at only 1.3kg the Sold Secure Gold rating that this D lock is an impressive feat.  If this could be compared to any other lock on this list, it’s similar to the New Evolution 5 from Kryptonite.

Weighing only a hundred grams more, this D Lock betters Kryptonite’s Evolution Mini 5 in more than just one category.

The clip feature of this lock is more convenient than the frame mount you get with the Mini 5. The Hiplok DXC D lock also features a 14mm hardened steel shackle which is 1mm thicker than the Mini 5.

1mm may not sound like much, but this extra thickness could be what prevents a thief stealing your ride!

Unlike other D locks in this list, the DXC comes with a handy 1m steel cable. Extension cables can be used to secure extra accessories such as your front wheel, which adds to the overall security of your bike whilst secured with the DXC.

Similar to Kryptonite’s double deadbolt design, the Hiplok DXC features anti-rotation locking.

This means that more than one cut would have to be made before your bike could be released. This as we have covered, is a premium feature that you only find on the best D locks.

The shackle of the Hiplok DXC measures 85mm across giving you plenty of space to secure your bike’s frame and potentially your rear wheel at the same time (shown below).

Hiplok DXC Bike Lock Sold Secure Gold
The shackle of the DXC is large enough to secure your rear wheel & frame. You can then use the cable attachment to secure your front wheel.

The Sold Secure Gold rating that the DXC obtained, secured its place in this list of the best bike D locks on the market. Hiplok also awarded the DXC with their maximum security rating, which really is no surprise.

This lock’s practicalities make it super convenient for those who are using their bike multiple times per day. In the long run, it will save you hours of opening and closing your rucksack or faffing around attaching a lock to a fiddly frame mount.

If I was still riding my bike as a cycle courier, or was using my bike throughout the day this would be my weapon of choice.

Lightweight, Sold Secure Gold rated, super practical, free cable extension…. enough said.

The Best D Lock - Summary

So there we have it, the top 5 best D locks available. These locks all made it into the top 5 for different reasons.

Some benefit from being super practical, whilst others offer the ultimate levels of security.

All of the D locks in this list have gained the Sold Secure Gold rating (or Diamond!). This shows they are top quality and offer the highest levels of security.

The Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini is the best D lock on the market to date.

Thanks to its 18mm Max-Performance steel shackle, there isn’t a pair of hand-powered bolt cutters out there that could defeat this D lock.

    • 18mm Max Performance Steel Shackle
    • Completely bolt cutter proof
    • Lifetime warranty
    • Sold Secure Gold rated
    • Best portable bike lock on the market

Whilst this D lock is slightly heavier than some of the others in the list, the level of security it offers can’t be matched. I use the Fahgettaboudit Mini as my main bike lock, and since purchasing it I’ve never had an issue.

The extra weight you carry with this D lock is worth it for the added peace of mind you receive whilst leaving your bike unattended.

When I’m in the office or out around town, I don’t want to be worried about the security of my bike, which is exactly why I use the Fahgettaboudit Mini.

Otherwise, the Kryptonite Evolution Mini 5 is a fantastic option for those on a tighter budget. It’s suitable for securing your bike in high risk areas for longer periods of time.

If none of the best D locks took your fancy, read my review of the best bike locks. The locks included in this review are the best of the best.

    1. I overwhelmed. I just bought a new road bike. I would like a gold standard. high-security lock that Is light enough for me to ride with on my bike. I might need to park it in the city.

      Help.

      thank you.

      1. Hi Rebecca,

I totally understand, finding the right bike lock for your situation is important especially for a brand new bike!

The Kryptonite New York Standard is a good choice, It’s not super lightweight, but you can attach it to your bike using the mounting system supplied.

Otherwise, the OnGuard Pitbulll is another good choice, It’s lighter than the New York Standard and comes with an extension cable that will be helpful when locking your bike in a city.

Happy to answer any other questions!

        James
