The Best D Lock For Bikes

Which is the best D lock for bikes? This is a question that I’ve seen asked countless times online with few conclusive answers, so I figured I’d answer it myself.

Having worked in the bicycle security industry for over five years, I’ve used and reviewed locks from every well-known brand and many innovative products from smaller brands.

Below I’ve selected the six best D locks on the market and have compared their strengths and weaknesses to help you decide on a suitable option.

If you’re not 100% sure a D lock is what you need, you will benefit from reading my bike lock guide, then look through the best bike locks on the market or these six uncuttable bike locks for some varied lock suggestions.

Otherwise, I’ll cut to the chase and unveil the best D locks on the market.

    What Is a D Lock?

If you know what a D lock is and the benefits they offer, feel free to skip this section

Otherwise, for anyone who didn’t know, D locks are the most popular type of bike lock on the market and for good reason.

D locks offer an unrivalled security-to-weight ratio as they feature a solid metal shackle that encompasses your bike and its components, without the moving parts of a folding lock or multiple links of a chain.

Whilst bicycle chain locks tend to provide more locking options and increased space for multiple bikes than a D lock, they’re much harder to transport, and their links tend to be thinner (to remain somewhat portable), making them vulnerable to many forms of attack.

The Best Lightweight Bike Lock - ABUS 54 Mini
The ABUS Granit X-Plus 54 Mini weighs 1.2kg (2.69lb) and offers the Pedal Cycle Diamond and Powered Cycle Gold Sold Secure ratings
Kryptonite 1055 Mini Best portable chain lock
Kryptonite's Evolution 1055 Chain weighs 1.79kg (3.94lb), substantially heavier than the 54 Mini and only offers the Pedal Cycle Gold Sold Secure rating

Folding bike locks feature rivets, which allow them to bend and flex, increasing their versatility. However, these rivets are often targeted as a weak point, as seen in my recent youtube comparison of the Foldylock Mini & ABUS Bordo 6000.

D locks are made with less metal than chains, so they tend to be lighter and offer increased portability.

Additionally, cleaning and maintaining a D lock is simple as they don’t feature any rivets or external moving parts like folding bike locks.

the 6 best bike d locks

Whilst ABUS and Kryptonite have long dominated the bicycle security market, several smaller brands, such as LITELOK and Seatylock, are also featured below, thanks to the innovative range of products they offer.

I’ve produced a comprehensive individual review for each of the best D locks below, so if you want to learn more about a product below, have a read using the links provided.

    Let’s get into it!

The 5 Best Bike D Locks (In No Particular Order!)

    LITELOK X1

    Anti-Grinder, Competitively-Priced, The Best D Lock

    Pros

    Cons

    LITELOK X1 Deals:

The LITELOK X1 has taken the bicycle security market by storm, and for good reason.

LITELOK’s team spent the last five years working to perfect Barronium, their revolutionary anti-grinder technology, and it’s paid off.

As e-bikes are becoming more popular on our streets, thieves now opt for more powerful tools, so the need for grinder-resistant locks has never been greater.

At the LITELOK X1 launch event, several others and I attempted to cut through the X1 with a cordless grinder, needless to say, we didn’t get very far.

Several fragmented cutting discs later, we still hadn’t managed a single cut. Considering we were cutting the lock with it held in a vice, you can only imagine how challenging cutting this lock would be on the street.

Alongside its anti-grinder technology, the LITELOK X1 employs all of the features that you’d expect from a top-of-the-range D lock:

    • Double locking mechanism
    • 17mm shackle width (bolt cutter proof)
    • An ART 4 certified disc detainer cylinder
    • Armoured mechanism housing

As well as attending the X1 launch event, I also interviewed the founder of LITELOK, Prof. Neil Barron, to delve a bit deeper into this new breed of lock.

Having used the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini for many years, I’ve now swapped it out for the LITELOK X1, which I now use every day.

Yes, the X1 is quite expensive, but it’s cheaper than the Hiplok D1000 and certainly cheaper than replacing a stolen bicycle!

Feel free to read my comprehensive review of the LITELOK X1 if interested.

    Seatylock Mason

    A Top-Performing Lightweight D Lock

    Seatylock mason

    Pros

    Cons

Seatylock are known for their attention to detail and quality materials choices.

The Mason boasts the Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond rating, making it suitable for locking valuable bicycles in high-risk areas.

Unlike the LITELOK X1, the Mason doesn’t feature anti-grinder technology, so if you’re riding an expensive e-bike, the X1 is a better option.

That said, the Mason is cheaper than the X1 and the Fahgettaboudit Mini, whilst offering higher quality materials than the Master Lock 8278 and OnGuard Brute.

I recently produced a video comparison of the Mason vs the Fahgettaboudit Mini. So have a watch if you’re interested to see how these two high-security locks compare.

The Mason’s 13.75mm shackle isn’t technically thick enough to be considered bolt cutter proof, but it performed very well against my 32″ bolt cutters, and I could not crop it, leaving two tiny scratches.

Unlike some of the other D locks featured in this list, the Mason isn’t supplied with a mounting system, although one’s available, it’s sold separately.

Whilst the Mason is more expensive than the MasterLock 8278 and OnGuard Brute, it uses higher-quality materials that’ll last longer when exposed to the elements.

    ABUS Granit Extreme 59

    Impressively Strong German Engineering

    Pros

    Cons

The ABUS Granit Extreme 59 received the Powered Cycle Gold and Pedal Cycle Diamond ratings from Sold Secure, distinguishing it as one of the most secure D locks on the market.

The Granit Extreme 59 features a double-locking 16mm square parabolic shackle, which is bolt cutter proof and will successfully repel twist & hydraulic attacks.

The temper-hardened steel shackle is 26cm long and puts up an incredible fight against the entire arsenal of tools thieves use, whilst offering enough internal space to secure multiple bikes.

To further the 59’s security, ABUS threw in their XPlus cylinder, drastically increasing the Extreme 59’s protection against picking and manipulation.

Hardly any thieves will have the skills or tools, let alone the time to pick a lock, but if they did, the XPlus cylinder would drastically increase the difficulty, helping to thwart most picking attempts.

It’s worth noting the Extreme 59 D lock isn’t sold with a mounting system, so carrying it in a backpack is a good option. Otherwise, the Huldit Universal Bike Lock Mount is one of the best universal bike lock mounts.

The Huldit provides a simple and efficient way to transport this chunky D, whereas ABUS’ mount (sold separately) for the 59 is clunky and relatively expensive.

Two coded keys are supplied with this D lock that can be replaced if lost. One of these keys features a handy LED torch which will help when operating the Extreme 59 low-light conditions.

Whilst it doesn’t offer anti-grinder protection like the Litelok X1 or Hiplok D 1000, the Extreme 59 is still one of the most secure bike locks on the market and is suitable for locking multiple bikes in high-risk areas.

ABUS U-lock Granit Extreme 59 - motorbike & bicycle lock with XPlus cylinder - highest ABUS security level 20 - shackle height 260 mm

    Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit Mini

    The Old Faithfull

    Pros

    Cons

Until the release of newer anti-grinder technology (LITELOK X1 & Hiplok D1000), the Fahgettaboudit Mini had been stationed at the top of the bicycle security rankings for years.

Weighing 2.06kg (4.55lb), with its Pedal Cycle Diamond and Powered Cycle Gold Sold Secure Ratings, the Fahgettaboudit offers one of the best security/weight ratios on the market.

Unlike most other D locks, the Fahgettaboudit Mini features an 18mm Max-Performance steel shackle. If you know a bit about bike locks, you’ll understand the benefits this offers.

If you don’t, you should catch up on uncuttable bike lock technology.

An 18mm steel shackle is impossible to crop with hand-powered bolt cutters. The largest hand-powered bolt cutters don’t even open wide enough to encompass the Fahgettaboudit’s shackle.

In my video below, you can see how the Fahgettaboudit compares to the Seatylock Mason, another of the best bicycle D locks.

As with most of the best D locks, a double deadbolt system protects your bike when secured with the Mini.

This means that if a thief managed to cut through the shackle of the Fahgettaboudit Mini, the shackle would not rotate or spin as a cheaper D lock would.

Instead, a second cut would have to be made, doubling the time taken to defeat the Fahgettaboudit.

Whilst the Fahgettaboudit isn’t supplied with a mounting system, this D lock can be easily carried in a rucksack, mounted with the Kryptonite H-Bar or used seamlessly with the Huldit Mount.

I had used the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit as my primary bike lock for nearly four years, and never had an issue with it.

I now use the Litelok X1 as my day-to-day lock, but bear in mind this costs nearly double the price of the Fahgettaboudit Mini, so if your budget is tighter, the Fahgettaboudit is one of your next best options.

If you want to learn more, read my comprehensive review of the Fahgettaboudit Mini.

    OnGuard Brute

Incredible Security at a Budget Price

    OnGuard Brute Bike Lock

    Pros

    Cons

The OnGuard Brute is an excellent option for anyone on a lower budget looking for a high-security D lock.

We’ve included the Brute in our list of the best D locks for the last four years, and few locks can compete at this price point.

Measuring a whopping 16.8mm, its hardened steel TriRadius shackle ‘resists all forms of cutting, prying or jacking’ and is thick enough to be labelled bolt cutter proof.

Sold Secure gave the Brute their Pedal Cycle Diamond accreditation, making it suitable for high-risk lock-ups with medium-high value push bikes.

The OnGuard Brute retails at a similar price to the MasterLock 8278 and is subsequently featured in our review of the best cheap bike locks on the market.

The Brute also features something that we don’t see from other locks on this list, the X4P Quattro Bolt Locking Mechanism.

This advanced mechanism locks the shackle of the Brute on four sides, which provides increased security against more forms of attack than a single-bolted bike lock.

Whilst the OnGuard Brute doesn’t offer anti-grinder features like the LITELOK X1, it’s considerably more affordable for those on a tight budget, whilst offering top-tier security.

If you’re interested in the Brute, read my in-depth review. Or, if you’re interested in learning about other budget-friendly bike locks, read about the best cheap bike locks

    Master Lock 8278 EURDPRO

    Lightweight, Affordable & Diamond Rated

    Pros

    Cons

    Master Lock 8278 Deals:

The Master Lock 8278 is the lightest Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Diamond-rated bike lock on the market, which is a pretty impressive flex.

It’s also one of the most affordable in the Diamond security category

I recently reviewed the 8278 to strip it back and identify any of its weaknesses, and it’s safe to say I didn’t find many.

It uses a hardened steel shackle that has two different diameters, a small section measures 12.81mm, whereas the majority of the shackle measures 14mm thick.

Technically, neither of these measurements are thick enough to be considered bolt-cutter proof, but thieves are unlikely to carry big enough bolt cutters on the street to stand a chance of cutting this.

If you’re looking for a lightweight D lock that won’t weigh you down when riding, the Master Lock 8278 is one of your best options.

It’s not supplied with a mounting system but works well with my Huldit mount and several other mounting systems.

Overall this lock has a similar quality to the OnGuard Brute. The 8278 doesn’t use the highest-quality materials on the market and does show signs of wear quicker than a more premium lock.

But these few downsides are relatively easy to see past at such an affordable price [Amazon link].

    D Lock FAQs & Tips

As always, I recommend cyclists invest in a D lock with the Pedal Cycle Silver Sold Secure rating or higher.

Bronze-rated bike locks aren’t fit for purpose as they provide “protection from the opportunist thief”, which is inadequate for almost any bike.

Silver-rated locks are suitable for use in low-medium risk areas or shorter lockups.

Sold Secure Pedal Cycle Gold-rated locks provide enough security to be used in high-risk areas. Still, if you’re locking a valuable bike for longer periods (all day, overnight etc.), you’ll want to invest in a Diamond-rated lock, like most featured in this review.

One other factor you’ll want to consider is insurance.

Many insurers will require you to use a Gold or Diamond-rated bike lock, so it’s worth reading through your policy if you have one!

Technically speaking, “Uncuttable” is unachievable, but there are several bike locks on the market that provide extreme protection against all forms of cutting attacks.

It’s no surprise that the LITELOK X1 features in the list. Technically speaking, the X1 isn’t “uncuttable”, but it’s one of the most uncuttable and unbreakable locks on the market.

If you want to learn more, you should read my guide covering all of the top-performing uncuttable bike locks

Since the invention of the bike lock, cyclists have been wondering and experimenting with various methods of carrying locks whilst riding.

One of the most popular methods of transport for a bike lock is in a backpack.

Backpacks provide quick access and storage for your lock at either end of your journey, in addition, most cyclists have a backpack already, so they won’t need to spend any more on a mounting system.

Hanging a D lock from the handlebars or frame of your bike is another popular option, but a poorly secured lock can cause your bike to show signs of wear (scratches & dents), so this isn’t ideal.

I’ve included several further tips on how to carry a bike lock when riding in this guide.

When using a D lock, there are four rules of thumb that you should follow to ensure your bike is locked correctly:

    • First, ensure the lock you’re using offers sufficient security for the bike you’re locking and the area you’re locking in. High-risk areas need a high-security lock (Gold or Diamond rated)
    • Second, when locking your bike, prioritise locking its most expensive components, which will nearly always be the frame and rear wheel. Encompass these with the shackle of your D lock and then secure it to a suitable immovable object. You may also use a cable extension alongside your D lock to help secure additional components.
    • Third, double-check you’ve locked correctly. It only takes a second to check double you’ve locked up properly. It’s also worth double checking the bike rack or street light you’re locking to is secure and hasn’t been tampered with.
    • Finally, remember lock maintenance is essential. Lubricate and take care of your D lock, and you shouldn’t have any issues in the long run.

If you want to increase the security of your bike, read my guides on how to lock a bike properly and things to do before your bike is stolen.

The Best D Lock - Summary

So there we have it, the top 6 best D locks on the market. These D locks made it into this guide for different reasons.

Some benefit from being lightweight and portable, whilst others offer unmatchable levels of security.

All of the D locks in this list have gained the Sold Secure Gold rating (or Diamond!). Remember, if it’s bronze rated or un-rated, this is probably for a reason.

The LITELOK X1 is the best D lock on the market to date, it retails at almost half the price of the Hiplok D1000, whilst still providing very impressive anti-cut ability.

Its 17mm Barronium encrusted shackle will send thieves looking for an easier target, or break their angle grinder completely and send them home empty-handed. Exactly what we want to see.

    LITELOCK X1 Deals:

    View on LITELOK

Until the X1 was released, I’d been using the Fahgettaboudit Mini to lock my bike for many years.

However, knowing and having experienced first-hand the X1’s ability to shred angle grinder discs, I don’t feel anxious anymore when I leave my bike locked up in high-risk areas.

If you don’t require the best performer in security and would rather have a more lightweight lock, check out the Seatylock Mason or Master Lock 8278.

When I’m in the office or out around town, I don’t want to be worried about the security of my bike, so if you find yourself worrying, here’s your remedy

Understanding how devastating it is to have a bike stolen, I've researched & immersed myself in the world of bicycle security since 2013.

I then built BikeLockWiki in 2019 to share everything I'd learned with the worldwide cycling community so that cyclists can improve their bike security skills and make informed decisions when purchasing new products and services.

    1. I overwhelmed. I just bought a new road bike. I would like a gold standard. high-security lock that Is light enough for me to ride with on my bike. I might need to park it in the city.

      Help.

      thank you.

      1. Hi Rebecca,

I totally understand, finding the right bike lock for your situation is important especially for a brand new bike!

The Kryptonite New York Standard is a good choice, It’s not super lightweight, but you can attach it to your bike using the mounting system supplied.

Otherwise, the OnGuard Pitbulll is another good choice, It’s lighter than the New York Standard and comes with an extension cable that will be helpful when locking your bike in a city.

Happy to answer any other questions!

    2. As an urban citizen and prior victim of bike theft, I now use multiple locks to secure my bicycles. When at home I rely on kryptonite New York chains as well as New York locks. I recently purchased a Hiplok D1000 which fits comfortably in my backpack for transport within the city. I back that up with a Fahgettaboudit Mini. The peace of mind is worth the weight in my backpack !!

      1. Hi Jim!

Thanks for reading & your insightful comment.

I’d even consider using the D1000 alongside one of your New York chains at home. With a pair of forceps it’s surprising how easy chains are to cut.

        Safe riding!
